Northern Alsace: a unique history

One of the birthplaces of the oil industry, Northern Alsace, particularly the Pechelbronn area, is home to the world’s first recorded site for the prospecting, drilling and exploiting underground oil – one of the oldest subsurface energy sources.

Heaps, pit heads, and the remains of workshops and buildings shed light on the region’s industrial heritage and identity.

Far from the derricks, mine shafts and tunnels of the past, Lithium de France uses the most advanced survey and exploration technologies while building on 210 years of prospecting history.

Land of opportunity

Alsace enjoys a remarkably well-preserved natural environment (Natura 2000, World Network of Biosphere Reserves). Lithium de France is committed to unleashing the potential of its subsurface while safeguarding Alsace’s rich history and environment.

Lithium de France’s project harnesses a natural and sustainable resource: geothermal water. The combination of heat and geothermal lithium offers France an opportunity to address its energy independence and its sovereignty.

Social and environmental benefits

Advances in the production of heat exclusively for local use and geothermal lithium for electric vehicles will boost the attractiveness of Northern Alsace and protect its environment.

1

A Lithium de France plant can supply local, sustainable and continuous heat to businesses, industries, local community facilities such as gyms, swimming pools, visitor centres, and agricultural projects like greenhouses or fish farming.

2

Once the heat has been extracted for distribution, the water is circulated in a direct lithium extraction unit to filter out lithium – a metal essential to operating EV batteries.

The cooled geothermal water with a low lithium concentration then returns to its natural environment, the same one from which it was drawn, before continuing its virtuous cycle.
